Chris McGeorge - International - Athletics

“I watched the 1968 Olympic Games and was inspired to run. The following year a family friend saw me compete in the Carlisle City sports and suggested to my dad that I should join a club.”


Biography:


As a pupil of Austin Friars School in Carlisle, Chris played most sports and but found running the most enjoyable and the one where effort and hard work was rewarded. From 9 years of age Chris was a member of an athletics club, Cockermouth ASA, and thrived in the competitive environment. 


By the time Chris was 14 years of age he had placed second in the all England Schools Championships and at 16 ran an age group record. Chris made his senior international debut aged 17 and continued competing at that level for twelve years. Other achievements include a sub 4 minute mile and a top 20 world ranking at 800m. 


Although Chris did not attain Olympic status he strived to do so on three occasions missing out to the likes of Coe, Ovett and Cram. Striving to be an Olympian was a journey that has left its mark, in the way he applies himself to both his coaching and working life.
Upon retirement from athletics Chris began his teaching career had been planned for during the final years of his athletics career. This coincided with Chris, and his wife Sonia, coaching fun athletics to children and also coaching elite international athletes.


Now living in Loughborough and working at Loughborough College, Chris works as an elite sport education and welfare officer, managing the 40+ elite performers that attend Loughborough College.
