Craig Heap - Olympian - Gymnastics
"Who we become is the greatest reward for achieving our dreams, not what we get."
Biography:
Craig started gymnastics aged 9 at his local sports centre, after his parents took him to classes in order to put his hyperactivity to use! He accepts that being a gymnast in an all boys high school was a challenge but believes this helped shape him into the successful person he is today.
Craig's career spanning 20 years included fourteen Junior and Senior British championship titles, over one hundrer International appearances for his country which includes attendance at five European and World Championships, two Commonwealth Games and the 2000 Olympic Games. In 1998, he became the first person to captain England to team gold in the Commonwealth Games and in Manchester four years later, he did it again.
His career however, was not without its difficulties, seven weeks before the 2000 Olympic Games he broke his hand but fought to keep fit by training with his one good hand. Craig not only made the Games but qualified for the All-Round final and achieved a personal best.
