Jayant Mistry - Wimbledon Champion - Wheelchair Tennis
"So, what's stopping you??"Biography:Jayant was born with Spina Bifida. When he discovered wheelchair tennis at the age of 19, he had been playing wheelchair basketball for 6 years, so had plenty of wheelchair skills. He noticed his talent for wheelchair tennis after a couple of years in the sport when he started beating people who'd been playing considerably longer than him.
During his 20 year career he played in approximately 250 singles and doubles finals, claiming 68 international titles (20 singles and 48 doubles titles) on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, with his most famous being the 2005 Wheelchair Men's Doubles Championship at Wimbledon in 2005. This was historic on 2 counts, it was the first ever Wheelchair Championship contested there and the only Wimbledon Championship in history that has been decided by a final set tie-break. Later the same year he was victorious in the Wheelchair Tennis Doubles Masters (World Championships).
Jayant was the undisputed British Men's No 1 for more than 15 years and was ranked in the Top 10 in the ITF Wheelchair Tennis World rankings in either singles or doubles every year from 1995 to 2007. He took great pride in representing Great Britain, participating in 20 World Team Cups (Davis Cup of wheelchair tennis) and four consecutive Paralympic Games starting in Barcelona in 1992. At the Sydney Paralympics in 2000 he narrowly missed out on a medal in the doubles event, losing in three sets in the play-off for the Bronze medal.
